When Everything Was New

It was 400,000 years ago and everything was new. People looked pretty much like us, not much hair, big heads. On a large continent, in a sparse village, where lived a small tribe, it was Monday morning and everyone stumbled awake and got to work. The men gathered together with their hunting gear and prepared to leave the village for the next several days on a hunt for meat. The women took care of the children, prepared meals for everyone, much as they do nowadays. Their cheery chatter soon rising to a din that became the beating heart of the tribe.

The men silently trooped off into the forest. The leader, a big burly man named Bross lead the way. They were off to meet the men of the neighboring tribe, to collaborate on some hunts. A new man from another more distant tribe, Silvergold, was counselling Bross to meet at a different place, he had it on good authority. They go there and the other tribe is not there, Bross is trusting this Silvergold less and less.

This is bad news. It will be much more difficult for the men to harvest larger animals like a wild cow, buffalo or elephant. They will have to work harder for less.
